Roswell is located in northern Fulton County, Georgia. In 2012, the city had a population of over 93,000 according to City Data. The town is renowned for Roswell Mill, which was built in the 1830s by Roswell King. King exploited the potential to produce cotton when he identified the availability of close by, suitable agricultural land. Roswell mill and additional mills were built by King’s slaves brought from his coastal plantation and carpentry slaves bought in Savannah. The African slaves also built the local houses and infrastructure and provided their unique Geechee culture, traditions, and language to north Georgia.
Roswell has a 640-acre historic district that offers tours, festivals, shopping, and lodging. The town offers a variety of attractions, nightlife, and entertainment for all ages. Also, close by are the Chattahoochee River, woodland trails, and marsh boardwalks. Some of the more popular activities are highlighted below.
- Children and adults will enjoy the Chattahoochee Nature Center. A 127-acre environmental sanctuary with freshwater ponds, wildlife, and hiking trails. Nature lovers will also enjoy the Chattahoochee River itself, ideal for canoeing and kayaking, and the Vickery Creek trail for hiking and running.
- Families can enjoy other local activities such as minigolf, Sprayground splash park at Riverside Park, a Skyzone indoor trampoline park, in-door go-karts and games at Andretti Indoor Karting and Games, movies, restaurants and nightlife.
- Local architecture is rich and includes the Archibald Smith Plantation home, see Barrington Hall, and Bulloch Hall, a Greek revival mansion and the childhood home of President Theodore Roosevelt’s mother, Martha Bulloch. Year-round ghost tours are also popular, as is the Spirit of Roswell riverboat.
A vibrant tourist industry and the high-tech corridor provide employment opportunities. Additionally, according to Roswell.org, other major employment sectors include retail, health care, hospitality, and the wholesale trade. Kimberly-Clark is the largest company in the area and is a medical products supplier with approximately 1,600 employees.
