Workplace stress has become a national phenomenon.
According to the American Institute of Stress, 80% of workers feel stress on the job at some point and about half of those folks say they need help and learning ways to manage stress. If you are experiencing stress at work it could be causing you to become less productive and less engaged in your job. While workplace stress can come from a number of sources, there are some things you can do right now to help alleviate the stress you feel.
Three Steps to De-Stress in a Hurry
Stop Where You Are
Go to a safe place and stop everything for five minutes. Head outside if you need to. Get yourself away from the source of stress and just take a few minutes to clear your mind. Stress comes from having too much thrown at you at once. The body goes into overdrive and stress hormones kick in, causing the natural “fight or flight” feeling. If you can remove yourself for a few moments from any stressors, you can regain your clarity and stop being overcome by stress.
Breathe Through It
Another way to de-stress quickly is to focus on some mindful breathing. You can even do this standing at your workstation. When the moment is right, close your eyes and begin to breathe deeply in through your nose and out through your mouth. Take three to four deep breaths and focus on imagining a warm, peaceful light around you. Do this until you feel your heart rate slowing down and you feel calmer.
Take a Walk
Exercise can be very good for reducing stress levels. A good way to quickly de-stress is to take a short 15-minute walk. Walk around the building where you work and stop by to see a few people that you know. Or use your lunch break hour to walk around and enjoy the sunshine. You’ll be amazed at how much better you feel with just a little bit of extra cardio in your day.
If work stress is an ongoing problem for you, you may want to speak to a healthcare provider about any potential health causes. Reach out to your employee assistance program at work to find out what support you can find for dealing with stress. A job change might be in order as well, so consider taking on a temporary assignment in a new atmosphere.
