The phone interview is a popular method for doing some initial candidate screening before scheduling in-person meetings. Control Your Environment

In-person interviews have all the participants in the same space, and it is generally an area the hiring manager can control. A phone interview leaves the physical location up to you, so it is critical you select an option carefully. You will need to identify a quiet space with limited chance for distractions, allowing you to give your full attention to the interview. If you are taking the call from home, make sure children, pets or other household members aren’t able to freely access the location and can’t be easily heard through the walls or doors.

Additionally, make sure you can be comfortable in the room, such as choosing a chair that offers the right level of support, and gather any needed documents in advance and have them placed easily in reach. If possible, consider interviewing over a landline if your cell service isn’t strong to help limit the presence of static or risking a dropped call.

Dress the Part

While it may be tempting to handle a phone interview in your pajamas, if you have enough advanced warning to select your attire, choose an outfit that would otherwise be appropriate for an in-person interview for the position. This helps you enter a more professional mindset and can ensure your conversational approach doesn’t become too familiar or casual.

Smile When You Speak

Since a phone interview eliminates any visual cues regarding your interest in the position, it is imperative you convey your excitement in your voice. One of the easiest ways to ensure your tone is upbeat is to smile when you speak. The simple action of smiling can make you sound more positive and even enthusiastic. And, when your voice is your sole way of making an impression, every little thing helps.

Be Careful With the Content

If you tend to inject subtle humor into your interview responses, now may be the time to reconsider that approach. As mentioned above, a phone interview means there are no visual cues during the conversation, so a statement that might come off as humorous in person may be harder to interpret without the benefit of seeing your expression and body language. While this doesn’t mean your responses should be devoid of personality, it does mean it is important to understand that a misinterpretation of your intent could leave a negative impression.
